Le Mans MotoGP race round up.

Round 4 of the MotoGP 2009, Le Mans France. The riders were not welcomed here at Le Mans with wonderful sunshine, instead they were greeted by drizzle and showers.

The race started on wet tyres, but over the period of the race the track began to dry out resulting in the riders needing to change their bikes to slicks.

Dani Pedrosa started in pole, beating Jorge Lorenzo to 2nd and Casey Stoner to 3rd. Valentino Rossi started on the second row with Andrea Dovizioso and Colin Edwards. Ex. World Champion Superbike rider and British hopeful James Toseland started 12th on the grid and 2006 MotoGP Champion Nicky Hayden Starts 1 place behind in 13th.

Dani Pedrosa gets a flying start, with stoner moving up to 2nd and Lorenzo right behind. Before the end of the 1st lap, Lorenzo has battled from 3rd to 1st position. Rossi has powered in to 3rd and has his eyes set upon Dani Pedrosa and fellow Fiat Yamaha Rider Jorge Lorenzo.

Casey Stoner begins to lose position as the laps go on. Rossi gets himself into 2nd, whilst under pressure by Andrea Dovizioso, and Lorenzo accelerates into the distance. Stoner unfortunately, is now in 7th place after having been over taken by Vermeulen.

Rossi is the first rider to go in to swap to the dry tyres, although due to the track being still a bit damp he promptly low-sides and slides into the gravel. The first 4 riders Lorenzo, Dovizioso, Stoner and Vermeulen still on wet tyres are leading the race by a good margin. Rossi manages to nurse his broken bike back to the Pits, but is now in last position.

By the time the race get to 18 laps remaining, the race for the lead is all but over. Jorge Lorenzo has an 11 second lead from Melandri in 2nd.

Rossi still in last position has gone in for the 3rd and last time to retrieve his now repaired bike with the dry tyres for the second time.

Despite going backwards throughout the beginning of the race Stoner is now in fighting position for 4th place with Dani Pedrosa in 5th.

James Toseland now in 7th, along with Nicky Hayden only 2 positions behind.

By the time the race gets to 11 laps remaining, Lorenzo is in 1st, Melandri is in 2nd and Dovizioso is in 3rd, but with an ambitious Dani Pedrosa in 4th the race for the podium wasn't over. With only 1 lap to go Dani Pedrosa had several attempts on Dovizioso but eventually manages the pass and finishes the race in 3rd, with Lorenzo in 1st and Melandri in 2nd.

While this was going on, the middle of the pack were having a significant battle. Toni Elias, Alex De Angelis, Nicky Hayden and Yuki Takahashi were all fighting for 10th place.

The Le Mans win means that Jorge Lorenzo overtakes Valentino Rossi in the World Championship by 1 point.
